Veterinary College, Hebbal, Bengaluru

The Veterinary College, Hebbal, Bengaluru, was inaugurated on July 25, 1958, and celebrated its Golden Jubilee from September 2007 to August 2008. The college has consistently strived to align veterinary education with societal needs and the aspirations of livestock farmers by promoting excellence in teaching, research, extension, and professional development.

The Department of Poultry Science, Veterinary College, Bengaluru, is one of the pioneering departments dedicated to serving the farming community and the poultry industry. The department has produced more than 350 postgraduate professionals in Poultry Science and has guided over 50 doctoral scholars to successful completion of their Ph.D. programmes, making significant contributions to poultry education and research in India.

The department has the distinction of organizing the first IPSACON in 1971, followed by another successful edition in 1995. Continuing this proud legacy, the department is once again hosting the prestigious IPSACON 2026, bringing together poultry scientists, academicians, industry experts, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and students from across the country and abroad.

Among its landmark achievements are the development of the renowned poultry varieties Giriraja for rural poultry farming in 1989 and Swarnadhara for backyard poultry production in 2006. In addition to research, the department actively conducts regular training programmes, workshops, hands-on training, and skill development initiatives for farmers, entrepreneurs, veterinarians, and students, thereby contributing to sustainable poultry development and rural livelihood enhancement.

The Indian Poultry Science Association (IPSA), founded in March 1965, is a registered professional body dedicated to advancing poultry science and promoting sustainable poultry development in India. With nearly 1,900 members, IPSA brings together scientists, researchers, academicians, students, entrepreneurs, veterinarians, and poultry industry professionals working across diverse sectors of poultry science and production.

One of the Association's major milestones is the publication of the Indian Journal of Poultry Science (IJPS), launched in 1966. The journal continues to serve as one of India's leading peer-reviewed scientific journals in poultry science and is now published digitally in collaboration with ICAR–Directorate of Knowledge Management in Agriculture (DKMA).

IPSA has organized more than 40 national symposia, conferences, seminars, and technical meetings, providing an important platform for scientific exchange and discussions on poultry production, health, breeding, nutrition, marketing, welfare, and emerging technologies. The Association also recognizes excellence through prestigious honors including the Ayurvet Award, Young Scientist Award, Fellowships, and Lifetime Achievement Award. Governed by an elected Executive Committee, IPSA has played a transformative role over the past six decades in shaping India's poultry sector into a socially attractive, environmentally responsible, and economically viable profession.
